Private earwax removal via microsuction in Staveley

Microsuction Earwax Removal

Earwax is a natural and important substance, but when it builds up it can cause real discomfort. At Staveley Pharmacy, we offer professional microsuction earwax removal carried out by trained clinicians in a calm, clinical setting. Whether you are dealing with muffled hearing, a blocked sensation, or persistent discomfort, we are here to help.

What Is Microsuction?

Microsuction is a safe, precise method of earwax removal that uses gentle suction to clear blockages from the ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing, which uses water, microsuction is a dry procedure. The clinician uses a fine, low-pressure suction device and, in many cases, a small illuminated microscope or loupe to see clearly inside the ear throughout the procedure.

Because there is no water involved, microsuction is considered one of the safest and most comfortable methods available. It is the technique preferred by many ear specialists and is widely used in NHS and private audiology settings.

What Are the Signs That You Might Need Earwax Removal?

Earwax build-up does not always cause obvious symptoms, but common signs include:

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in one or both ears
  • Muffled or reduced hearing
  • Itching or discomfort inside the ear canal
  • Tinnitus (a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ears)
  • Earache without an obvious infection
  • A sensation of sound echoing inside your head
A note on tinnitus: If you are experiencing a persistent ringing or buzzing sound in your ears, this can sometimes be a sign of tinnitus rather than, or in addition to, a simple wax blockage. We are happy to advise you and can signpost you to more specialist support if needed.

Who Is Microsuction Suitable For?

Microsuction earwax removal in Cumbria is suitable for most adults and can be particularly beneficial for:

  • People who have been told they have narrow or unusually shaped ear canals
  • Those who have had previous problems with ear syringing
  • Hearing aid wearers, as wax build-up is more common with regular hearing aid use
  • People with a history of ear infections or perforated eardrums (subject to clinical assessment)
  • Anyone who prefers a dry, quick, and highly controlled procedure

Who Might Not Be Able to Have Microsuction?

Whilst microsuction is safe for the vast majority of people, there are some situations where it may not be appropriate or where we may need to take extra care. This includes:

  • Active ear infections or discharge from the ear (treatment of the infection should come first)
  • A known or suspected perforation of the eardrum that has not been assessed by a GP or specialist
  • Very young children (we treat adults and older teenagers; please contact us if you are unsure)
  • Anyone who has recently had ear surgery (a GP letter or specialist clearance may be required)

If you are unsure whether microsuction is right for you, please give us a call before booking and we will be happy to advise.

What Happens During the Appointment?

Knowing what to expect can help you feel more at ease. Here is what a typical microsuction appointment at Staveley Pharmacy involves:

  • A short consultation to discuss your symptoms and medical history
  • Examination of the ear canal using a small otoscope to assess the extent of the blockage
  • Gentle suction applied directly to the earwax using a fine suction probe; the process is usually quick and involves minimal discomfort
  • A post-procedure check to confirm the canal is clear and your hearing has improved
  • Advice on aftercare and how to reduce the risk of future build-up

Most appointments take around 20 to 30 minutes in total. You can drive yourself and return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Could You Need Earwax Removal Again?

Some people only ever need earwax removal once, whilst others find that wax builds up regularly. You may benefit from repeat appointments if you:

  • Wear hearing aids
  • Work in dusty or noisy environments
  • Naturally produce large amounts of earwax
  • Have narrow or hair-filled ear canals
  • Are an older adult, as earwax tends to become drier and more likely to build up with age

There is no set frequency that suits everyone. We will advise you at your appointment based on what we find, and many of our patients simply rebook when they notice symptoms returning.

How Much Does Earwax Removal Cost at Staveley Pharmacy?

We keep our pricing straightforward and transparent. There are no hidden charges. If we examine your ears and find that no wax removal is needed, we will let you know at the appointment.

What our customers say

“Thank you Staveley Pharmacy for the way in which you dealt with my dad’s prescription following our call to NHS111.  It was very much appreciated.”

A Hames

“Didn’t have my prescription in stock due to suppliers being out of stock, so rang round other chemists in the area. When no luck the owner rang GP to get the prescription changed for a similar alternative. Stayed open late whilst waiting for GP to get back in touch. Incredible service and very much appreciated thank you.”

M Wardle

“Prompt and organised team, a huge and valuable range of services, from medication to health checks, and equipment. Staveley Pharmacy is most valued by the District nursing team.”
